Domains, Hosting & WordPress 101

What is the difference between a domain and a hosting account?

domain name = business name

If you were starting a restaurant, you would choose a name for your place. If you call it Joe's and put out a sign, no one will know what Joe's is. So, you'll call it Joe's Bar & Grill or whatever most closely describes what you offer so people will stop in. Now, if you are choosing a domain name, it is the same idea. What is your name and what do you do? Try to get those keywords into your domain name so search engines know what you do.

hosting server = land

You now need a place to build your restaurant. You can't afford to buy it outright so you lease it from the owner. This is essentially what you are doing with hosting accounts. They lease space on their servers for you to build your site. They also provide some services.

Website = Building

So, now we build your website using the WordPress platform which is like building a restaurant using framing. Then the real work begins of making the site look just like you want with all the functionality that you need. Just as your restaurant needs specialized equipment, your website may require special functions or plugins to accomplish those functions.
